Burns has tumor operation


Former world champion Richard Burns underwent an operation at a London hospital today as part of his treatment for the brain tumour which forced him to pull out of the sport in 2003. The former Subaru and Mitsubishi driver was diagnosed with an astrocytoma after falling ill before the season-ending Wales Rally GB.

A statement was issued on behalf of the Briton. "Since being diagnosed with an astrocytoma, a form of brain tumour, in November 2003, the 2001 World Rally Champion has followed a course of chemotherapy and radiotherapy," it said. "Burns has been recovering very well since leaving hospital last summer, however he has had health problems in recent weeks. The media, friends and fans are asked to respect the family's privacy at this time." Doctors described the outcome of the operation as "very successful"
