Jellinek’s daughter Mercedes was born in 1889. The Spanish name Mercedes means "mercy". His wife died four years later. Emil Jellinek’s business activities were so profitable that he moved to Nice.
He purchased his first motor vehicle there, a Dion-Bouton tricycle. This was followed by a three-wheeled Léon-Bollée Voiturette, which was then replaced by a four-seater Benz motor coach. Jellinek’s attention was drawn to Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG) by a newspaper article. In 1897 he traveled to Cannstatt to visit the Daimler factory and ordered his first Daimler vehicle, a six-horsepower belt-driven car with a two-cylinder engine. The vehicle was delivered in October 1897, however its maximum speed of 24 km/h was soon too slow for Jellinek. He demanded a top speed of 40 km/h and ordered two more cars. The two Daimler Phoenix models delivered in September 1898, which featured a front-mounted eight-horsepower engine, were the world’s first road vehicles with four-cylinder engines.
From 1898 Emil Jellinek, who owned a large house in Nice and was well connected in international financial and aristocratic circles, became increasingly active as a dealer in automobiles, promoting and selling Daimler vehicles in the uppermost echelons of society. In 1899 DMG already delivered ten vehicles to Jellinek, and no less than 29 one year later.
Emil Jellinek urged DMG to produce increasingly powerful and fast vehicles, and also entered them for racing events – above all the Nice Week – where he habitually competed under a pseudonym: he used the first name of his daughter. Jellinek’s pseudonym Mercedes was already very well known in motoring circles.
